The College has been working with Frank Haslam Milan (FHM) the regeneration specialists who deliver various housing elements, including refurbishment, repairs, facilities and asset management and new build projects.
FHM contacted the College as they were keen to take on a student for a paid 3 month work placement in Leeds. Nishan Rathore and Mick Whitehead from the College’s Work Placement Team contacted Emma Kennedy Training Officer at FHM to identify their requirements.
Emma said that she would like to interview full time joiners aged 18+ and from the LS7 post code area as there was a work placement opportunity on a new housing estate with 24 new builds – Code 4 houses in the Scott Hall/Chapeltown area of Leeds.
Mick and Nishan looked through our full-time student database and identified students who were from the LS7 postcode areas.
We contacted each student to inform them of the work placement and they were all asked to prepare a CV which was passed to Emma for review, they were then invited to attend an interview which the College helped them to prepare for.
The 30 minute interviews were held on Friday 11th November at Clarence Road. In total there were 8 students who attended the interviews with FHM and a worker from Unity Housing.
Paul Sharples was the successful candidate, Paul is 18 and from the LS7 area and is currently studying towards a Level 2 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery. Paul started his work placement in November and will be on the housing project until March 2012. He is spending 2.5 days in College and 2 days out on site working.
We would like to thank FHM for supporting the College and providing Paul with a valuable work experience placement, which will help him find out what skills employers look for when hiring and give him valuable work experience to put on his CV. Work Placements help improve students self-confidence and communication skills, which will help them adapt to the realities and challenges of the modern work place.
