What is an Apprenticeship?

If you are aged 16 to 25 you are eligible to apply for an Apprenticeship. This is an ideal route if you have gained employment and, in agreement with your employer, wish to work towards NVQ qualifications, up to Level III.

The idea is that you work and earn at the same time, usually attending college one day a week or on block release for a number of weeks. Apprenticeships are an excellent way to improve your skills and qualifications whilst earning money at the same time - this means they are a very popular route for many young adults.

There are also Apprenticeships aimed at those aged over 25, which have recently been introduced by the Government. In principle, the programme works the same as traditional apprenticeships, with attendance based on either a block or day-release pattern.

Some adult apprentices will be combined with younger apprentice groups. However, where possible, discrete groups will be established. Opportunities exist in all vocational areas, but places are limited.

Do I have to pay for my training?

Training is free for 16 to 18-year-olds.

 Those aged over 19 have to make a contribution towards their training through an annual course fee (this should be met by the employer).

Can I still apply if I don't have a job already?

You can still apply and sit the assessment test. It is preferable if you are already working within the industry or have employment lined up. Employers generally select new apprentices from direct applications, and therefore we would recommend that you apply direct. We may have a few opportunities through our existing contacts, but these are likely to be minimal. Due to the number of applications we receive for Apprenticeships, we cannot guarantee finding you a placement, although we can provide advice on finding an employer. The best route is to find yourself an employer either before or during your application.

Will I be paid?

As an apprentice you are fully employed by your employer and paid the going rate for the job. There is no set wage structure for apprentices, but most first-year apprentices earn between £100 and £150 per week. The college provides the training and assessment through block or day-release study.

What training will I be given?

  • Practical skills in your chosen occupation, plus associated theory;
  • Health and safety in the workplace;
  • Key Skills / Basic Skills (Maths, English and IT).

What qualifications are available?

Training will last up to two years for an Apprenticeship and approximately three years for an Advanced Apprenticeship, depending on the craft occupation. During this time you should achieve NVQ Level III, which will give you access to higher education or supervisory and management-level qualifications and employment.
