Competitions
WorldSkills UK is the name for the UK’s premier set of skills competitions for young people and adults. The competitions aim to encourage people across the UK to excel in their work-based skill. They also aim to help lift standards of training and performance.
The competitions run both regionally and nationally each year in the UK and aim to help lift standards of training and performance, promoting world class skills and international competitiveness.
Outstanding WorldSkills UK National Finalists may be considered for potential inclusion in a shortlist for the team that goes on to represent the UK at a WorldSkills Competition.
WorldSkills UK is supported by government, the Devolved Nations and a host of other partners across business, industry and the world of education and training.

How are Leeds College of Building Involved?
Students regularly participate in regional and national competitions demonstrating the skills they have learnt in a particular craft area. As the College has excellent facilities and resources we often host the regional and national finals.
Principal Ian Billyard is responsible for encouraging organisations to get involved in WorldSkills UK competitions, raising the level of skills and the aspirations of young people and increasing the number of people participating in these skills competitions.
The College takes part in two skills competitions; SkillBuild and Skill M&E which are part of the WorldSkills UK portfolio.
SkillBuild
The SkillBuild competition is the largest multi-trade competition in the country for construction trainees and apprentices.
It covers crafts including:
- Carpentry
- Joinery
- Bricklaying
- Cabinet Making
- Plastering
- Dry Walling Systems
- Painting and Decorating
- Wall and Floor Tiling
- Roofing
The competition is run by ConstructionSkills in association with UK Skills. Success at the SkillBuild regional heats in 2010 will give entrants the opportunity to challenge for a place on the shortlist and could eventually progress to compete at the 2011 WorldSkills competition in London.
In last year's competition students from Leeds College of Building were awarded 5 medals at the final, 1 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze.
Skill M&E
Skill M&E consists of four skills competitions that search for the best mechanical and electrical engineers from the building services engineering sector and is run by Summit Skills.
SkillELECTRIC, SkillFRIDGE, SkillPLUMB and SkillPIPE have been designed to promote standards and skills across the sector, developing competence into excellence.
The 2009 final of SkillPIPE was hosted by Leeds College of Building and students from the College were awarded 1st and 2nd place.
