College Life

Competitions play a big role in student development at Leeds College of Building and we encourage our students to participate in regional and national competitions. We feel taking part in these events allows students to showcase their skills and for the winners, not only can they receive great prizes it gives them a head start in their chosen career.
Feedback from students who have taken part in the competitions is excellent, it’s given them the opportunity to compete at a high level, increased their confidence, allowed them to demonstrate their skills to potential employers and they are extremely proud of what they have achieved.
The SkillBuild competition is the largest multi-trade competition in the country for construction trainees and apprentices and covers areas such as carpentry, plastering and wall and floor tiling.
SkillM&E consists of four skills competitions that search for the best mechanical and electrical engineers from the building services engineering sector and is run by Summit Skills.
SkillBuild & SkillM&E are part of WorldSkills UK and national finalists may be considered for potential inclusion in a shortlist for the team that goes on to represent the UK at a WorldSkills Competition.
We also enter the Dulux Apprentice of the Year, Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year, National Apprenticeship Awards, HVCA Training Awards, West Yorkshire Life Long Learning Awards and many more.
In 2011/11 students were awarded medals in the following:
