Skills Academy Case Studies
Kevin is currently in year 10 at Corpus Christi Catholic College and is studying towards a Level 2 Certificate in Construction and a GCSE in Manufacturing at Leeds College of Building.
He spends 2 days at the College, 1 day is spent in the workshop and classroom, and the other day is spent working with the estates team helping with general maintenance of the College. The remaining 3 days during the week are spent at school studying towards GCSEs in English, maths and science.
Kevin was made aware of the fantastic opportunity to study at the College when he was in year 9. He immediately thought it would benefit him as he prefers working and learning in a more practical environment. He put his name forward and was invited to spend a day at the College to see if he liked it.
He said “After spending some time in the workshop, I knew that this was an opportunity too good to miss”.
Kevin signed up and joined the College in September 2013.
As part of the course, Kevin learns various construction trades including brickwork, carpentry and joinery, painting and decorating and plastering. He is currently making a table in his carpentry and joinery practical lessons.
When asked what he wants to do when he leaves school he said “I would like to get an Apprenticeship and work for my Dad’s plastering business”.
