Jamie started as an apprentice at the College in 2011 and completed the Roof Slating and Tiling Level 2 & 3 NVQ. He worked for his dad’s business Kellett Roofing. Whilst at the College, Jamie’s tutor Chris Messenger had been to Australia, when he returned he was saying how fantastic it was and if students ever got the opportunity they should go and work out there!
So that’s what Jamie did! We caught up with Jamie to find out more about his trip of a lifetime.
How did you find your job?
After I left LCB I thought about what Chris had said and it really appealed to me, so I emailed a few companies in Sydney to see if they had any vacancies. Westwood Roofing offered me a job; I’m here for one year on a holiday visa. Most of the work is high profile, government buildings, churches and colleges, including heritage projects.
What do you like about your job?
I enjoy working in a team, fitting excellent looking roofs, earning a good salary whilst having banter with my colleagues. I really enjoy socialising after a hard week at work; the biggest challenge is the heat.
Advice you would give to students starting out?
My advice to people starting out in a trade is stick with it, it is hard work at first, but if you are dedicated and want to do well, it pays off in the long run! If you are contemplating going to Australia, just got for it, you only live once!
Plans for the future?
Continue enjoying my time in Australia, then head back to the UK and start my own business.
