Part-Time Courses Case Studies

Joel Broughton

Joel is currently studying the Level 1 Brickwork Diploma and has been at the College for 6 months.

When Joel was a baby he contracted meningitis, and unfortunately lost the use of a number of digits. In spite of this, Joel continues to inspire both staff and students with his desire and determination to succeed.

He decided to join the College after his brother Aaron told him about the course, Aaron is also a student at the College, studying carpentry & joinery.

Prior to starting at the College he worked as a welder for Leeds City   Council, he enjoys woodworking and helps out at the Men In Sheds project in Leeds, which is a lottery run scheme supporting older men who want to get together to learn new skills. He has also helped to build disabled planters at his allotment and made the trowel he is using in the picture.

Whilst on the course he completed a work placement with East North East Homes and is hopeful he will secure a permanent position in the industry.

Joel’s tutor, Paul Huddlestone says “Joel is a fantastic student and is an   inspiration to his fellow students. He is hard working and doesn’t let anything stand in his way, he would be a real credit to any employer and we hope he can secure a permanent position.”
