Carpentry and Joinery
Bellway Homes approached the College in March of this year to assist them with the recruitment of 10 new Brickwork & Joinery apprentices for their Yorkshire division.
However after student applications had been shortlisted, the recruitment process was put on hold due to the national lockdown. Fortunately in July, Bellway confirmed that they could go ahead but that the recruitment target was reduced to only one apprentice.
Four LCB students were interviewed and feedback from the Bellway Homes Construction Manager was that he was impressed by the quality of our students, describing them all as “perfect candidates”. Billy from the Level 2 Carpentry & Joinery was successful and has returned to LCB as an apprentice.
Heather Walker, Work Placement Officer said
“When Bellway Homes reduced their apprenticeship recruitment target for this year, it really increased the competition for our students, all of which would have made excellent apprentices. What made Billy stand out from the rest was the experience that he gained through completing work placements with Galliford Try and Bowmer & Kirkland. He was able to demonstrate his knowledge of working on site at interview and give solid examples of applying his practical skills in the real world. He thoroughly deserves this apprenticeship and will have an exciting future with Bellway Homes.”
Billy said:
"I gained this apprenticeship through hard work at the College and work placements I have done throughout the last year.
Bellway asked me to attend an interview and asked me several questions about why I wanted the job and why Joinery was the career I wanted to go for. They were very passionate and polite in the interview and made me feel comfortable.
So far on-site I’m loving the experience and have learned so much in the space of a few weeks. Everyone in the workplace makes me feel at home and I can’t wait to see where my career goes."
