We don’t currently have the capacity to run the Carpentry Skill Start courses so we're not taking any applications or holding any kind of waiting list. We are reviewing the situation regularly and will update this page if anything changes.
What's it all about?
This course is aimed at those aged 19+ who are interested in a career in carpentry and joinery or who simply want to gain some skills in this area.
This course covers the following:
- Health, safety and welfare
- Information, quantities and communication
- Construction technology
- Prepare to carry out carpentry and joinery
- Carpentry and joinery skills
- Clear and store carpentry and joinery tools and equipment
Next steps
After completing the Level 1 course there are a number of options available, depending on your final grade you could move onto an apprenticeship, a Level 2 or Level 3 Certificate/Diploma or seek employment.

This is a Skill Start course.
The 9 week day time course will give you an introduction into your chosen trade area. After this you will have the option to progress onto a longer programme studying towards a Level 1 Diploma.
Level 1 Award & Certificate – no entry requirements, length of course is 9 weeks.
Level Diploma – no entry requirements, length of course is 17 weeks (if you have completed the award) or 23 weeks.
