Course Content

This unique part-time programme is one of only a handful of similar courses offered across the whole of Yorkshire & The Humber. The course is endorsed by Lincoln Electric, the global leader in arc welding and cutting, and renowned as The Welding Experts® worldwide.

The programme is suitable for 19+ individuals currently working in the industry but who would like to gain formal qualifications OR those looking to re-train or upskill in this diverse field. It may also be suitable for this who are self-employed.

During the course, you will gain a broad grounding in materials, processes, and health & safety practices in well-equipped, high-spec workshops. Unlike other welding courses that specialise in one area, you will learn about the latest fabrication and welding equipment and techniques, covering:

  • Manual Metal Arc Welding
  • Metal Inert TIG Welding
  • Tungsten Inert TIG Welding

This innovative course also embraces new technology. Students will experience learning through theory and practical hands-on training, but also by using cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) equipment.

The College is one of only a limited number of institutions nationally to use Lincoln Electric’s VRTEX® 360 Compact Virtual Reality Welding Simulator, giving students a safe learning experience through convincing graphics, sounds, and accurate movements.

Using the VRTEX® 360 Compact, virtual welding training can seamlessly transfer into real-world, hands-on welding as students gain competencies. The eco-friendly equipment reduces wastage, tracks welding defects, and has different training modes and simulated environments.

On this Level 2 course, you will gain versatile skills and understanding of:

  • Health and Safety in a Fabrication and Welding environment
  • Materials, science and calculations for Fabrication and Welding practice
  • A vast range of welding techniques and materials, metals, and alloys demanded in industry

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, however a strong interest in welding or previous experience in this industry is preferred.

Course Length

The course is available part-time on day release, running on Mondays, 8.30am-4.00pm (35 weeks in year 1 and 15 weeks in year 2).

Assessment

In order to successfully achieve this qualification, learners must fully meet all learning outcomes in line with industry demands. This is done by completing the Skills and Education Group Awards’ practical and online multiple-choice assessments. On completion, the programme leads to full ABC Level 2 certification.
