Course overview
This Level 3 Building Services Engineering Service & Maintenance Engineer apprenticeship is available to anyone over the age of 16 who meets the entry requirements.
It replaces the Heating & Ventilation Engineer apprenticeship.
Service and maintenance engineers play a key role in planning and completing a range of maintenance work, including industrial and commercial building services engineering systems such as ventilating, heating, water supply, waste and drainage. This includes related electrical isolation, disconnection, reconnection and reactivation. They also complete planned preventative maintenance and undertake any required remedial repairs.
The course is designed to give apprentices the knowledge, skills and behaviours required in the role of Service & Maintenance Engineer.
What skills and qualities do apprentices need?
The skills required by an apprentice service & maintenance engineer are varied and include:
- Practical skills
- Methodical approach
- Ability to follow technical drawings
- Attention to detail
- Comfortable working at heights
- Numeracy skills
Entry requirements
Apprentices should be aged 16 or over and be employed or secured employment in the industry.
It is recommended that apprentices have 4 GCSEs grades 9-4 (A-C).
You must have achieved a grade 3 or above in both English and Maths for this apprenticeship.
All applicants will sit an entry test to determine their English and maths skills.
Employers may specify additional entry requirements.

What would apprentices learn at College?
- How to install basic hot and cold heating, chilled water and fuel systems e.g. gas and oil
- How to maintain the above systems including the replacement of parts and checking for faults
- How to maintain various appliances and equipment used in the heating and ventilation industry e.g. boilers, fan coil units and air handling units
- The core gas safety training in preparation for the ACS commercial assessment to enable you to be Gas Safe registered
- How to work with electrical motors and understand electrical circuits
- How to find and rectify faults within the systems

From 1st April 2021 all employers are required to use the government apprenticeship service to secure funding for any apprentices they wish to employ. Apprentices will be unable to start their course at college without reserving funding.
