Course overview
This Bench Joinery Apprenticeship is available to anyone aged over 16.
Bench Joiners (or Architectural Joiners) are based in a workshop and produce timber products such as doors, window frames, staircases and cabinets.
They use traditional woodworking tools as well as specialised power or hand tools for cutting, shaping, smoothing and finishing.
This apprenticeship is available on a hybrid model where the apprentice will attend college on a day-release basis but each half term they'll be required to complete one whole week block

What would apprentices learn at College?
On completion of this apprenticeship, bench joiners will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Understand how to accurately take site and workplace dimensions
- Understand how to form and proportion joints, such as mortice and tenon, dovetail and comb joints
- Carry out a range of job tasks including drawing, measuring, marking out, fitting, finishing, positioning and securing
- Produce setting out details for the manufacture of doors, windows and opening lights, units and stairs
- Mark out timber from setting out details for the manufacture of doors, windows and opening lights, units and/or fitments and staircases
- Create, fit and assemble components to manufacture doors, windows with opening lights, units and/or fitments and staircases
- Use joinery tools and equipment, such as marking and testing tools, power tools and hand tools
No matter what level you are currently working at, you will be expected to further your skills in Maths & English.
Entry requirements
You should be aged 16 or over and ideally already be employed or have secured a work placement, however we may be able to help you with this. Good GCSEs are recommended and you will be required to sit a skills assessment.

If you are aged 16-18 and you are unable to find an apprenticeship, you can apply for a study programme and switch over at any point when you do find one.

From 1st April 2021 all employers are required to use the government apprenticeship service to secure funding for any apprentices they wish to employ. Apprentices will be unable to start their course at college without reserving funding.

After completing this course there are a number of options available, depending on your final grade you could move onto the Level 3 Bench Joinery Apprenticeship or seek permanent employment.
