Course overview

This Level 2 Site Carpentry Apprenticeship course is available to anyone aged 16 and over.

Carpenters work with wood on building sites or in customers' homes to fit or repair doors, window frames, stairs, floorboards, cupboards, roof trusses and partitions. They use traditional woodworking tools as well as specialised power or hand tools for cutting, shaping, smoothing and finishing.

This apprenticeship is available on a hybrid model where the apprentice will attend college on a day-release basis but each half term they'll be required to complete one whole week block

What would apprentices learn at College?

On completion of this apprenticeship, site carpenters will have acquired the occupational skills and knowledge to be able to:

  • Carry out a range of job tasks including measuring, marking out, fitting, cutting, splicing, finishing, positioning and securing
  • Install door and window frames, door and hatch linings, floor joist coverings, straight partitions and straight staircases
  • Install doors, ironmongery, service encasements, wall and floor units and fitments, cladding and staircase components
  • Erect inclined roofs with gables, joists, roof coverings and roof components
  • Repair or replace frames, mouldings, doors, windows, door and window ironmongery, roofing components, guttering and downpipes and window components
  • Use, maintain and store hand tools, power tools and associated equipment
  • Understand how to form specific joints required for site carpentry work, such as mitres, butt and halving joints

No matter what level you are currently working at, you will be expected to further your skills in English and maths.


Entry requirements

You should be aged 16 or over and ideally already be employed or have secured a work placement, however we may be able to help you with this. Good GCSEs are recommended and you will be required to sit a skills assessment.

If you are aged 16-18 and you are unable to find an apprenticeship, you can apply for a study programme and switch over at any point when you do find one.

From 1st April 2021 all employers are required to use the government apprenticeship service to secure funding for any apprentices they wish to employ.  Apprentices will be unable to start their course at college without reserving funding.

After completing this course there are a number of options available, depending on your final grade you could move onto the Level 3 Site Carpentry Apprenticeship or seek permanent employment.
