Course overview

The construction industry is going through some huge changes, often referred to as the “fourth industrial revolution”, which represents a change in how we live and work. So the need for data, information and design in the sector is increasing, as is the use of lasers, drones, BIM processes and data analytics.

Digital Engineering Technicians optimise the performance of built environment projects using digital models and software, sketches and electronic visualisations. Apprentices will typically support digital engineers or other functional specialists in completing complex tasks using digital engineering techniques.

What would apprentices learn at College?

Specific units within the Diploma include: Construction Principles, Construction Design, Construction Technology, Health & Safety plus optional units.

  • Virtualisation and simulation of design, construction and management of assets
  • Digital measurement of design, production and management of assets
  • Communication of complex engineering principles to stakeholders digitally
  • Produce and recommend detailed design solutions
  • Integration of construction data and information throughout the whole life cycle of the asset

What skills and qualities do apprentices need

A careful, methodical and accurate approach to your work, the ability to work well in a team, good problem solving skills, a creative eye.

Entry requirements

All applicants will need 4 GCSEs at grade 9-4 (A*-C) in English and maths.

You need to be employed in the industry and will be required to pass a skills assessment.

They will be able to advise you on the course content, offer advice for levy and non-levy payers and provide details on the end point assessment (EPA).

From 1st April 2021 all employers are required to use the government apprenticeship service to secure funding for any apprentices they wish to employ.  Apprentices will be unable to start their course at college without reserving funding.
