Course overview

This Level 3 Surveying Technician apprenticeship is available to anyone aged over 16.

The apprentice will complete an online portfolio of evidence which will be supervised by in-company mentors and LCB assessors.

Completion of the apprenticeship standard will be confirmed following the satisfactory conclusion of an end point assessment (EPA).

What skills and qualities do apprentices need?

The main duties and tasks of a Surveying Technician are:

  • To collect information from inspections or visits to buildings, land and construction sites
  • To take appropriate measurements of buildings, land or plans
  • To meet with other professionals, clients, customers and others to obtain and provide information relating to land, property or construction
  • To collect and record data relating to land, buildings or construction for technical use
  • To manage work tasks relating to the area of practice
  • To undertake costings and/or measurements and/or valuations using data collected from research
  • To ensure a safe working environment for themselves and others

What would apprentices learn at College?

  • Construction Principles
  • Construction Design
  • Construction Technology
  • Building Surveying
  • Quantity Surveying
  • Building Regulation and Control

Entry requirements

The entry requirement for the apprenticeship will typically be five GCSEs at Grade 4 (C) or higher including Maths and English or a Level 2 apprenticeship in a construction or property related discipline.  

Apprentices who are granted entry without GCSE Grade 4 (C) or higher in Maths and English will be required to achieve Functional Skills in English and Maths at Level 2 as part of the apprenticeship.

From 1st April 2021 all employers are required to use the government apprenticeship service to secure funding for any apprentices they wish to employ.  Apprentices will be unable to start their course at college without reserving funding.

Next steps

After completing this course there are a number of options available; depending on your final grade you could move onto a higher education course including a HNC/HND, higher apprenticeship or a degree at university, or you could seek employment.
