Entry requirements

You will need a BTEC level 3 extended diploma, one A level at grade C or above or two A levels at grade E in a relevant subject,  such as maths, science and geography.

This is a part-time top-up course, and is for students who have completed a relevant Civil Engineering HNC qualification.


What would I learn at College?

The Level 5 BTEC Higher National Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment offers students the opportunity to develop a sound understanding of the principles in their specialist pathway. 

It is designed to support progression into employment or on to degree-level study. The civil engineering pathway aims to prepare students for a range of technical, professional and management careers in civil engineering.

This will enable students to make an immediate contribution in their employment by developing a range of skills and techniques essential for successful performance in working life.

Fifteen units are required to complete the HND. The civil engineering pathway has units specifically targeted to meet the needs of a civil engineer.              

Some of the units covered in the course include:

  • Unit 1: Individual project (Pearson-set)
  • Unit 8: Mathematics for construction
  • Unit 20: Principles of structural design
  • Unit 22: Group project (Pearson-set)
  • Unit 29: Geotechnics & soil mechanics
  • Unit 30: Advanced structural design
  • Unit 42: Highway engineering
  • Unit 43: Hydraulics

A member of the team will then contact you and confirm the next steps; if you meet the entry criteria you will be invited to a College Enrolment Day, these typically take place throughout summer.


Next steps

This course is designed to provide progression in to employment in the construction and the built environment sector or to a relevant degree course/apprenticeship.

Students could also gain membership with the relevant chartered institutes.
