Celebrating International Women's Day

Caroline Meehan, College Governor

Introduction to Caroline

I'm currently the Northern Director at Federation of Master Builders. I’ve worked here 6 years now, since I returned from living in Australia.

How Caroline got to where she is now

The only construction experience I had before this role was that my ex partner of 11 years was a builder and I used to go on site with him sometimes and we’d talk through the design, layout, what the clients were having where and why. My passion lies in interior design, so I was always looking at floor plans to see if the architect had maximised the light, if the flow of the home felt right, what materials were being used, I had no qualification in construction before working for the FMB but a huge interest in the built environment and the people that build it.

Tips for anyone wanting to start their career in construction

I would say the ‘Future is female’ for the construction industry, in any area, trade, on site work, off site work, I believe the entire industry is in such a great place which I know is contrary to the narrative. But the most exciting opportunities ahead are for females in my opinion. I believe this because I see it, I have seen the outstanding females now coming into LCB, winning awards, being hired as their work and dedication to their career is heads and shoulders above others. I see these females changing the construction landscape entirely, what an absolute time for females in construction there is a head of us.

Women bring fresh perspectives and creativity to the industry. We’re breaking down stereo types, showing up, delivering excellence from the heart, and I urge all females to give the construction industry a thought. You will have a brilliant and varied career, and you will make a great living from doing so.

Remember your peers, collaborate with each other and support each other as we are a minority, but a very powerful one.

What made Caroline enter the Construction Industry

I have a creative mind and I love seeing building projects, meeting the people who are clever enough to create amazing homes, buildings, spaces and I think my passion for interiors brought me to the industry along with the varied tasks throughout my role, it’s never boring.

Challenges she's faced

I've faced many challenges, including being taken seriously, being listened to and heard, being included, sexism and misogyny. But I have equally met kindness, chivalry, inclusion, and made many friends along the way.

Personal qualities that helped her succeed

These include having a creative mind, being a problem solver but also think outside of the box. In addition, someone who likes to be on their feet, moving about, as well as having great people skills.

Caroline's favourite part of working in construction

Meeting up with members, going to visit their projects and seeing the pride on their faces and hearing the joy when they talk me through the challenges they’ve overcome and the teams they work with.
