My journey to university

BTEC Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment

I'm in my second year of a Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment at the College. I recently completed my UCAS application for university and am hoping to study a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture.

When I look back at when I was at school, I can see that I didn’t put enough effort in.

I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I knew that I really liked design, so I started to explore careers where I could use that. Then I found Architecture and decided that’s what I wanted to do.

I chose to go to Leeds College of Building so I could learn in a construction-focussed environment. I feel really motivated now that I’ve found something that I’m passionate about.

I re-sat my English GCSE at the College and now that I’ve applied to uni, I can understand how important it is to get your English and Maths GCSEs. I’ll be the first in my family to go to uni, so we’re all working it out together, looking at Student Finance and accommodation. I’m doing the Progression Module Plus with Go Higher West Yorkshire and that’s really helped with my personal statement, making choices for university and getting extra UCAS points.

My advice to someone at school now, who’s looking at what to do next, is to find something that you’re interested in and put all your effort into it.

I think it’s important to dream big, do it for yourself and don’t follow other people. It’s definitely paying off for me and I hope one day I’ll run my own company.
