Course overview

This Bench Joinery Apprenticeship is available to anyone aged over 16.

Bench Joiners are based in a workshop and produce timber products such as doors, window frames, staircases and cabinets.

They use traditional woodworking tools as well as specialised power or hand tools for cutting, shaping, smoothing and finishing.

What skills and qualities do apprentices need?

A careful, methodical and accurate approach to your work, the ability to follow drawings, plans and written or spoken instructions, a creative eye.

Entry requirements

You should be aged 16 or over and ideally already be employed or have secured a work placement, however we may be able to help you with this. Good GCSEs are recommended and you will be required to sit a skills assessment.

To search and apply for apprenticeship vacancies visit the national apprenticeship vacancy website.

If you are aged 16-18 and you are unable to find an apprenticeship, you can apply for a study programme and switch over at any point when you do find one.

You must have achieved the Level 2 NVQ Diploma to commence the Level 3 NVQ Diploma.

What would apprentices learn at College?

  • How to manufacture various joinery components e.g. window frames, doors and staircases in softwood and hardwood
  • How to calculate and cost materials
