Course overview

This Building Control Apprenticeship is available to anyone aged over 16.

Building control officers carry out assessments of building projects and inspect site work to ensure it meets the Building Regulations.

They may be employed by local authorities or as approved inspectors who advise on appropriate design solutions.


What skills and qualities do apprentices need?

Good organisational skills, good communication skills, a careful, methodical and accurate approach to your work.


Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade A*-C (9-4) including English, maths and science.

All applicants will be required to pass an assessment and be aged 16 or over, already be employed or have secured a work placement.

If you are aged 16-18 and unable to find an apprenticeship, you can apply for a study programme and switch over at any point when you do find one.


What would apprentices learn at College?

  • The underpinning mathematics and science related to construction and civil engineering
  • The technology of building construction
  • The principles of design in the built environment
  • How to calculate the cost of construction works and monitor the progress against the budget, building surveying, building regulations and control.

No matter what level you are currently working at, you will be expected to further your skills in English and maths.


Next steps

After completing this course there are a number of options available; depending on your final grade you could move onto a higher education course including a HNC/HND, higher apprenticeship or a degree at university, or you could seek employment.
