Course overview

This General Construction Operations Apprenticeship is available to anyone aged 16 and over.
General construction operatives work on site and complete a number of building tasks including drainage, concrete work, signage, lighting, bricklaying and general labouring.

What skills and qualities do apprentices need?

Good communication skills, the ability to work well in a team, the ability to use initiative.

Entry requirements

You should be aged 16 or over and ideally already be employed or have secured a work placement, however we may be able to help you with this. Good GCSEs are recommended and you will be required to sit a skills assessment.

If you are aged 16-18 and you are unable to find an apprenticeship, you can apply for a study programme and switch over at any point when you do find one.

You must have achieved the Level 2 NVQ Diploma to commence the Level 3 NVQ Diploma.

What would apprentices learn at College?

  • How to use various hand tools and cutting equipment
  • How to prepare and place concrete
  • How to prepare and lay finishing floor screeds
    How to mix various building materials by hand and machine
  • How to lay domestic drainage
  • How to set up signage, lighting and guarding when working on site e.g. path or road.

No matter what level you are currently working at, you will be expected to further your skills in English and maths.

Next steps

After completing this course there are a number of options available, depending on your final grade you could move onto a level 3 apprenticeship, into higher education or seek permanent employment.
