Nikki Davis is the Principal & CEO of Leeds College of Building – the first female appointed to the role in the College’s history. Nikki has been with the College since 2019, serving first as Vice Principal and then taking up the role of Principal in August 2022. Nikki is also a trustee of Leeds Arts University, the CITB, and Leeds Learning Alliance.
Before working at Leeds College of Building, Nikki held the post of Vice Principal (Technical and Professional) and Assistant Principal (Employer Engagement) at York College, Head of Department at Kirklees College, and Programme Manager at Leeds City College.
Nikki is passionate about improving diversity in construction, which in turn helps to tackle nationwide skills shortages. She believes a truly inclusive sector is crucial for everyone to access the incredible opportunities offered by construction. Green and sustainable skills training is also a big priority, helping contribute to important national net-zero targets.
David is a familiar face around campus, having worked at Leeds College of Building for over 25 years.
As one of the College’s strongest advocates, David says: “Leeds College of Building is an amazing place to be, which is why I am still here after 25 years. The people and the culture are fantastic, and I am very lucky to work here.”
Rob joined Leeds College of Building in 2022 as an Assistant Principal before becoming Vice Principal in 2024. His connection to the College began much earlier, in 2015, as a Curriculum Manager in Construction Crafts.
Starting as an apprentice bricklayer over 26 years ago, Rob remains a passionate advocate for the construction industry.
Chris started his career as a 16-year-old apprentice in Gas Service and Maintenance, progressing to a Technical Support Manager. Chris then joined LCB in 2008 and continued his academic and professional achievements.
Chris is the model example of life-long learning, having proudly achieved HNCs in Engineering and Business at age 36, and a Master’s Degree in Building Services Engineering at 48.
Steve has worked at the College for over 25 years, but trained initially right here as an apprentice wall and floor tiler. Steve worked as a wall and floor tiler on country-wide projects before starting his teaching journey here at LCB.
Starting at a tutor, and working his way up to Assistant Principal. He ensures our curriculum meets both student and industry needs, monitoring performance throughout the year.
You’ve built your career, now it’s time to share your knowledge with the next generation. Teaching offers you a rewarding and impactful career path where your guidance could change someone’s life forever. You’ll receive support with getting your teaching qualification plus be part of a supportive community of professionals. Help us build the future of construction.
Find out what our staff have to say about working at LCB
No, it’s very common for specialist staff to arrive here with in-depth knowledge of their profession but little or no teaching experience, but that’s where we come in. The most important thing is that you have the industry knowledge and skills to teach the next generation of professionals – whether bricklaying, plumbing, or painting and decorating.
For any roles that require teaching qualifications, we’ll support you in achieving after you’ve started. The most important thing is you have bags of enthusiasm and an ability to apply real-world scenarios to the classroom and workshops.
There are a huge number of benefits from moving into education. From a generous pension scheme to family friendly policies. Our holiday entitlement is excellent with teaching staff entitled to 35 days annual leave and support staff receive 25 days. On top of this, all staff receive 8 bank holidays and 10 college closure days.
There are many reasons why you may choose to get into education. Some are ready for a new challenge or have a change in personal circumstances; others are looking to step back from the stress of running a business and return to the joy of demonstrating their craft. All, however, are unified in the belief in passing knowledge and experience onto the next generation and the satisfaction of seeing people thrive with the right tools. If this sounds like you, we’d love to talk.
You might not realise it, but you’ve probably had experience of teaching without even knowing it – whether explaining what you’re fixing to customers and clients or taking apprentices under your wing. To help you find your feet, we offer on-the-job training and mentoring from staff who have been in your shoes.
New staff often comment on how friendly and supportive we are here. During your probationary period, we schedule regular reviews with line managers to ensure all your needs are being met. We also run wellbeing weeks full of activities and an extra day off for all staff to do something that makes them feel good. Our staff society runs trips and activities to help employees meet new people across the college.
It is expected that all staff undertake any mandatory training for their role. Depending on the position, this can include teacher training, assessor qualifications, in-house standardisation meetings, and training organised by our Quality Team. We set aside three hours every Friday afternoon as protected time for staff training, so you don’t need to study in your own time. This is a significant college investment, but one we believe is worth doing to give staff the skills they need to do their job properly.
Some posts come with funding to achieve teaching qualifications while you work. We’re here to walk you through each step to make sure you settle in and feel comfortable working with our students. We also have an ‘Aspiring Managers’ programme to help staff to progress within the organisation and undertake managerial roles later in their career.
