Course overview

Working in partnership with Leeds Beckett University, this training programme will allow apprentices to work towards their End Point Assessment with the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) and can achieve Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status on successful completion.

Entry requirements

Applicants need to be already holding an appropriate level 4 qualification, such as Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Civil Engineering or a higher apprenticeship, who are seeking to become engineering practitioners employed in the civil engineering sector and or related disciplines.

Employers may specify additional entry requirements.

The course will develop apprentices’ skills, giving them the opportunity to work on major projects such as designing large structures and a variety of infrastructure including:

  • Roads
  • Water supply/drainage
  • Bridges
  • Airports
  • Tunnels
  • Sea and flood defences
  • Structures supporting energy supply and transmission

Modules studied on the course include:

Level 5

  • Civil Engineering Management B
  • Engineering Materials Technology
  • Highway Engineering A
  • Structural Design
  • Geotechnical Engineering A
  • Work Based Learning Portfolio
  • Civil Engineering Design Project

Level 6

  • Hydraulics & Water Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Infrastructure Asset Management
  • Civil Engineering Major Project
  • Quantitative Methods for Decision Making
  • Work Based Learning Portfolio

The course is specifically aimed at those wishing to progress on to careers in civil engineering site management, but will also allow entry into careers with project management companies, government agencies, local authorities and modelling specialists. Typical job titles can include: Site Manager, Sub Agent, Assistant Site Manager or Section Engineer.

The course will allow apprentices to gain membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) at Incorporated Engineer level on completion of the apprenticeship.

In order to complete the IPD profile and pass the professional review, apprentices will need to demonstrate knowledge, skills and behaviours gained against the following ICE attributes:

  • Understanding and practical application of engineering
  • Management and Leadership
  • Commercial Ability
  • Health, Safety and Welfare
  • Sustainable Development
  • Interpersonal Skills and Communication
  • Professional Commitment

Throughout the apprenticeship, extensive support will be provided to both apprentice and employer through the process of tripartite reviews and the delivery of a non-credit bearing work-based module.

Please note each apprentice is required to have a delegated / supervising Civil Engineer who will assist with workplace learning and mapping of evidence collected to the 7 attributes, listed above. The final IPD sign off will be carried out by the ICE.
