Course overview

The Level 4 BTEC Higher National Certificate in Civil Engineering offers students a broad introduction to the subject area.

Throughout the course students will develop the skills and knowledge to enable them to meet the demands of employers and progress within the sector.

The civil engineering pathway provides the relevant vocational knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a career in site engineering, structural engineering design, civil engineering design and transport engineering design.

Entry requirements

A BTEC Extended Diploma, Diploma, Subsidiary Diploma, Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship or one A level, in a relevant subject (maths, science, geography). Alternative qualifications and relevant experience may also be considered.

Due to the specialist nature of this course and the level of study, we may recommend that students start on the Level 3 bridging course, which will provide an introduction to civil engineering at level 3.

This will be discussed with each applicant when they apply and will be based on their experience and qualifications.

Students will have the opportunity to apply critical reasoning and analysis techniques to solve engineering problems, using industry standards and appropriate codes of practice.

Some of the units covered in the course include:

  • Unit 1: Individual project (Pearson-set).
  • Unit 2: Construction technology.
  • Unit 3: Science & materials.
  • Unit 4: Construction practice & management.
  • Unit 6: Construction information (drawing, detailing, specification).
  • Unit 7: Surveying, measuring & setting out.
  • Unit 8: Mathematics for construction.
  • Unit 20: Principles of structural design.
