Nathan’s story – “an office job never appealed to me”

Why I chose Joinery

My uncle works as a joiner for Arnall Phillips. So, when I was looking for work experience, I asked him if they were hiring. Luckily, they were and so I started the next day.

I never knew that I wanted to be a joiner but having an office job had never appealed to me as I’ve always preferred practical work.

Why Leeds College of Building?

My employer was really helpful when I applied for the apprenticeship course as they already employed another apprentice that studies at Leeds College of Building.

They chose to send me here as they already knew about the high standard of teaching the college provides.

My day-to-day?

When I get to college I immediately crack on with whatever task I’m set for the day. If I get stuck, I know I can ask for help. If we’re doing something new, then my tutor always goes through the process in more detail.

To help me with my exams revision the college provided me with various websites to help me which I visit to build up my knowledge.

Putting my skills into practice

When at work I usually find myself doing the same tasks quite often but rather than finding this repetitive it allows me to refine my skills further and showcase what I’ve learned at college.

When I’m given a new task, it gives me the opportunity to try my hands at something that I may not be as familiar with and challenges me further.

“I love that during my apprenticeship I have the opportunity to meet new people!”

What I love most about my apprenticeship

I love that during my apprenticeship I have the opportunity to meet new people! It’s very different to my work sites, a totally different environment.

Being able to learn new things whilst in college motivates me to put in the work and it makes me excited to put these new skills to the test at my job.

What’s next for me

Once I complete my apprenticeship, I want to practice the methods I’ve learned and showcase the skills that I’ve developed. I’m looking forward to having the time to create new things during my quiet periods on an evening.

Support that makes all the difference

The tutors really get to know us on the course and will notice when I’m not my usual self, if I’m feeling a bit down or struggling. They will always check in with me to see if things are okay and give me a bit of time to reset before coming back into the workshop.

My advice to the next generation

Keep at it – things may seem repetitive at time but that’s how you learn and develop your skills to be able to make high quality products. Keep going and don’t give up!
