A Fresh Start: Lisa’s Journey into Plastering at Leeds College of Building

By Lisa Avery Jones

Why I Chose Plastering

After working in an office for the NHS for 15 years, I decided it was time for a change. Things weren’t great at work, and I needed a fresh start. I’d always been good at home improvements—doing up my own house—and I’d already completed a Plumbing course at the Leeds College of Building’s South Bank campus. So, I thought, why not add another skill to the mix?

Originally, I considered joinery, but there wasn’t a course starting straight away. So, I chose Plastering instead, which actually fits well with joinery. I’m hoping to eventually build enough skills to work for myself, flipping houses and handling all the trades myself. It’s not just about learning for the sake of it; it’s about being financially independent and doing something I enjoy.

Balancing College and Home Life

As a parent, balancing college with home life can be a challenge, but I’ve made it work. Thankfully, my dad lives with me and helps out, especially on Mondays when I have college. Having already completed the Plumbing course, I didn’t have to do much theory work this time, which has been a big help. It’s also allowed me to support other students in my class—especially with things like using software like Teams.

The support from everyone at Leeds College of Building has been amazing. Terry, my tutor, is fantastic. Everyone knows Terry! He’s incredibly encouraging, and he’s so passionate about teaching. I remember seeing someone comment on Facebook about how great Terry was, and I had to add, “I’ll second that.” It’s true—he’s the best.

Facing My Fears and Finding My Place

Coming back to college wasn’t without its worries. At first, I was concerned about practical things—like whether I’d be able to get a shower when I arrived if I walked in. I also didn’t realise I could get a bus pass, but I like walking because it helps me keep fit.

The staff have been nothing but supportive. From day one, everyone has been friendly and welcoming. Terry makes learning enjoyable, and the environment at the college feels so positive. You can feel the enthusiasm, not just from the tutors but from the students too.

The Application Process and Getting Started

The application process was straightforward. I did an English and Maths assessment online, which was pretty basic. I can’t remember having any problems at all. It’s such an accessible process and that makes a big difference when you’re returning to education as an adult.

“The staff genuinely care about your progress and always offer helpful feedback”

The Most Rewarding Part

The most rewarding moment for me so far? Probably when Terry complimented my work. I was working on skimming and Terry said, “I’d pay for that.” Coming from him, that was a huge confidence boost. The staff genuinely care about your progress and always offer helpful feedback.

I also loved visiting the Painting and Decorating area. Seeing all the different techniques, from spray painting to glitter finishes—it’s just inspiring. The college offers so much variety, and it’s great to see what others are working on too.

Encouraging Others to Take the Leap

If you’re thinking about coming back to college but feel hesitant, my advice is simple: Just go for it. You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain. I’ve seen it with my own eyes—students who feel uncertain at first but then fall in love with what they’re doing.

One of my friends on the course had a confidence knock at the start, but Terry helped her through it, explaining that her work was fine and that she was making progress. Encouragement goes a long way, and that’s what you get here.

Changing Perceptions of Construction

What I love about the college is that it feels like you’re actually on a building site. It’s practical, hands-on, and everyone’s working away while listening to Smooth Radio or having a laugh. It’s a real, friendly environment.

Construction isn’t just for men, and it’s not just about big building sites. Every house has walls, right? Learning plastering is practical and useful. Whether you want to get into construction professionally or just want to improve your own home, it’s a fantastic skill to have.

Looking Forward

My journey isn’t over yet. I’m enjoying plastering so much that I’m already thinking about what to do next. Maybe joinery or something else to add to my skillset. The beauty of Leeds College of Building is that there’s always an opportunity to keep learning and growing.

So, if you’re thinking about trying something new, don’t be afraid to take that first step. The support is there, the teaching is brilliant, and the skills you gain could open so many doors.
