Course overview
This Bricklaying Apprenticeship is available to anyone aged over 16, you will need to be employed in the industry or have secured employment.
Bricklayers build and repair structures, walls, chimneys, walkways and foundations using various types of blocks and brick. Their work can range from a house extension to a major stadium project!
They might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects. The range of sites and projects that bricklayers will work on include large commercial developments, new builds in housing, alterations, extensions and restorations. A bricklayer may work one-on-one or on larger jobs where their bricklaying group may work on a particular section of a building alongside other bricklaying groups as well as other trades.
Regardless of what level you will be working at, you will be expected to further your skills in English and maths whilst on the course.
Our Bricklaying apprenticeship is available on block release.

From 1st April 2021 all employers are required to use the government apprenticeship service to secure funding for any apprentices they wish to employ. Â Apprentices will be unable to start their course at college without reserving funding.

Entry requirements
You should be aged 16 or over and ideally already be employed or have secured a work placement, however we may be able to help you with this. Good GCSEs are recommended and you will be required to sit a skills assessment.

If you are aged 16-18 and you are unable to find an apprenticeship, you can apply for a study programme and switch over at any point when you do find one.

Next steps after this course
On completion of this course, apprentices will have learned the following:
- How to use bricklaying tools and equipment
- How to set out and build brickwork, including simple arches and surrounding brickwork
- How to set out and build brickwork, including common decorative features such as oversailing courses and simple corbels
- How to build using modern construction methods e.g. timber frame cladding
- Preparation of materials
- How to Interpret drawings and specifications
- How to measure the work area and set out level first courses of bricks to a plan, including bonds for openings and the damp course
After completing this course there are a number of options available, depending on your final grade you could move onto a level 3 apprenticeship, into higher education or seek permanent employment.
