Course overview

This is a Skill Start course.

This course is aimed at those aged 19+ who are interested in a career in the painting & decorating industry or who simply want to gain some skills in this area.

The level 1 and 2 diplomas are great for those who are looking to train as a domestic decorator, working on private housing properties.

If you are interested in the NVQ route, it’s best you speak to a member of the team, as changes are being introduced to this qualification later in the year.

Entry requirements

Level 1 Award & Certificate – no entry requirements, length of course is 9 weeks

Level Diploma – no entry requirements, length of course is 17 weeks (if you have completed the award) or 23 weeks

Due to changes in the way Adult Education is funded, from August 2021 onwards we only accept students who live within the West Yorkshire Combined Authority area or areas not covered by another Combined Authority.

The course covers the following units:

Level 1 Diploma

  • Carry out safe working practices in construction
  • Information, quantities and communicating with others
  • Building methods and construction technology
  • Erect and dismantle access equipment and working platforms
  • Prepare surfaces for decoration
  • Apply paint systems by brush and roller
  • Apply foundation and plain papers
  • Produce specialist decorative finishes
  • Prepare for and paint flush doors and hang wallpaper

Level 2 Diploma

  • Carry out safe working practices in construction
  • Information, quantities and communicating with others
  • Building methods and construction technology
  • Prepare surfaces for decoration
  • Apply paint systems by brush and roller
  • Apply standard papers to walls and ceilings
  • Produce specialist decorative finishes
  • Apply waterborne paint systems using high volume low pressure (HVLP) spray equipment
  • Erect and dismantle access equipment and working platforms
  • Prepare for and decorate a room including doors and balusters

The 9 week day time course will give you an introduction into your chosen trade area. After this you will have the option to progress onto a longer programme studying towards a Level 1 Diploma.

After completing the Level 1 course there are a number of options available, depending on your final grade you could move onto an apprenticeship, a Level 2 Diploma or seek employment.
