Course overview
This Installation / Maintenance Electrician Apprenticeship is available to anyone aged over 16. Apprentices will gain the skills and knowledge to carry out job roles and responsibilities associated with the installation and maintenance of electrotechnical systems.
Electricians fit, test and repair electrical installations found in homes and businesses. This could include, fitting consumer units and circuit breakers, connecting wiring to sockets, switches and light fittings and installing fire alarms.
On successful completion apprentices will have achieved the industry desired level of competence required to carry out the specific roles.
Entry requirements
It is desirable that you have 4 GCSEs at grade A*-C (9-4) including English, maths and science.
All applicants will be required to pass an assessment and be aged 16 or over, already be employed or have secured a work placement.

Course content
- Electricians will use engineering knowledge and understanding to apply their technical and practical skills. They will contribute to the design, development, manufacture, construction, commissioning, operation or maintenance of products, equipment, processes, systems or services.
- Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for the termination and connection of conductors, cables and cords in electrical systems
- Understand and apply the practices and procedures for the preparation and installation of wiring systems and electrotechnical equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
- Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for the inspection, testing, commissioning and certification of electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
- Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for diagnosing and correcting electrical faults in electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
- Understand and apply the electrical principles associated with the design, building, installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems
- Electricians must understand and apply health and safety and environmental regulations, guidance notes and relevant codes of practice; and the requirements of the current edition of the Wiring Regulations.
No matter what level you are currently working at, you will be expected to further your skills in English and maths.
