Course overview

Functional Skills is a recognised and respected qualification in English. This is a course for those who are English speakers but would like to improve their reading, writing or verbal skills, or simply want to gain a formal qualification.

Our Functional Skills English course, accredited by City & Guilds, is designed to equip you with the essential communication skills needed to thrive in everyday life, learning, and the workplace.
Through this course, you will:
  • Strengthen your writing by mastering spelling, punctuation, and grammar — helping you express yourself clearly and professionally.
  • Develop your reading skills to confidently understand and analyse different types of texts.
  • Build practical communication skills that are directly applicable to job applications, interviews, workplace tasks, and further study.

We offer Functional Skills English at Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2. Each level is comprised of three modules: Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening. All three elements need to be successfully completed to obtain the qualification.

Your tutor will assess your progress regularly and you will sit an exam in Reading and Writing. The Speaking & Listening unit will be internally assessed by your tutor. If you successfully complete all three modules at any level, you can apply for the next progress level course. The course will run subject to minimum viable class sizes.

Whether you’re looking to improve your confidence, prepare for employment, or progress in education, Functional Skills English provides a solid foundation for success.

Entry requirements

No formal prior qualifications are required. You will be invited to do an initial assessment to ensure you are enrolled at the correct level and so you can make good progress.

You need to commit to attending each session for the whole course duration and will be expected to complete any additional set work outside of the class to ensure you make good progress.

Entry Level and Level 1 are the ideal foundation for further study and Level 2 is recognised by many employers and universities as a GCSE equivalent.
