LCB student wins regional plumbing award to earn place in Grand Final

Posted 18 February

Leeds College of Building (LCB) Level 3 Plumbing & Domestic Heating student Maxton Young was crowned ‘North East Regional Winner’ at this year’s HIP Magazine Learner of the Year competition.

Hip Magazine was founded in 2006 to support plumbing & heating students and apprentices; they host an annual competition to uncover the very best emerging talent in the plumbing and heating industry.

At each of 6 regional heats, students take on a live practical challenge, putting their technical skills to the test under competition conditions.

After impressing the judges, Maxton was announced as ‘North East Regional Winner’ at the heat hosted at Gateshead College.

Maxton’s tutor Josh Pye said:

“It’s fantastic to see Max achieve this. I’ve taught him for over three years, and I genuinely believe he has what it takes to go on and win the Grand Final. I’ll be supporting him all the way.

“I’m really looking forward to the future and continuing to push more students to enter competitions like this and challenge themselves at the highest level.”

Reflecting on his win, Maxton said:

“It feels really good. I’ve put a lot of hard work into my college work and my job, so it’s great to see my workmanship paying off.

“I’m looking forward to learning more skills throughout my time at college and on the job, so I can become a good engineer and provide good quality plumbing and heating services.”

The HIP Learner of the Year Grand Final takes place at Barnsley College Construction Centre between Wednesday 29 – Thursday 30 of April.
