Course overview

This Property Maintenance Apprenticeship is available to anyone aged over 16.

The primary role of a Property Maintenance Operative is to optimise property condition and quality and to ensure the building is kept in a safe working condition.

Property Maintenance Operatives need to maintain a high level of quality, providing maximum satisfaction to customers, clients, guests and team.

They will understand the mechanism of buildings including electrical, plumbing, plant, safety systems and equipment.

Regardless of what level you will be working at, you will be expected to further your skills in English and maths whilst on the course.

Our Property Maintenance Operative apprenticeship is available on block release.

From 1st April 2021 all employers are required to use the government apprenticeship service to secure funding for any apprentices they wish to employ.  Apprentices will be unable to start their course at college without reserving funding.

Entry requirements

You should be aged 16 or over and ideally already be employed or have secured a work placement.

Good GCSEs are recommended and you will be required to sit a skills assessment.

You must have achieved a grade 3 or above in both English and Maths for this apprenticeship.

If you don’t have an employer you can search and apply for apprenticeship vacancies on the national apprenticeship vacancy website.

If you are aged 16-18 and you are unable to find an apprenticeship, you can apply for a study programme and switch over at any point when you do find one.

On completion of this course, apprentices will have learned the following:

  • How to understand and demonstrate the importance of Health and Safety in the workplace
  • How to comply with organisational safety, policies and procedures and identify hazards and reduce them
  • How to consider safety compliance with a diverse sector of client groups
  • How to understand and demonstrate the importance of working safely at height
  • How to carry out repairs to the fabric of a building, for example repairs to walls, doors, doorframes, skirting boards or plaster damage to internal walls
  • how to understand and maintain plumbing and drainage systems, for example repairs to WC systems, leaking taps or water testing and unblocking drains
  • How to maintain high levels of water hygiene within a building
  • How to understand and maintain electrical distribution, safe repair of electrical installation to legal requirements, for example replacing damaged sockets, plugs, lighting and fuses.

After completing this course there are a number of options available, depending on your final grade you could move onto a level 3 apprenticeship, into higher education or seek permanent employment.

No matter what level you are currently working at, you will be expected to further your skills in English and maths.
