Course overview

This is a City & Guilds accredited course aimed at adults wanting to gain an entry level qualification to pursue a career in Carpentry and Joinery or who simply want to gain some skills in this area.

This course covers the following:

  • Health, safety and welfare
  • Information, quantities and communication
  • Construction technology
  • Prepare to carry out carpentry and joinery
  • Carpentry and joinery skills
  • Clear and store carpentry and joinery tools and equipment

Courses are approx. 75% practical and 25% theory and all sessions are held at our North Street Campus in Leeds.

The college will provide all tools and materials needed to complete the course.

Please note that this qualification is NOT recognized by CSCS so cannot be used in support of an application for a CSCS Card.

Entry requirements

These courses are aimed primarily at beginners so no prior qualifications are needed, however you must meet certain other criteria:

  • You must be at least 19 years of age.
  • You have not previously achieved a City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Construction Skills (in Carpentry or any other trade).
  • You must have been living in the UK for at least the last 3 years (or at least the last 6 months if you have refugee status, leave to remain or are the husband, wife, civil partner or child of someone with refugee status or leave to remain).
  • You must have a basic level of spoken and written English.
  • You must live within the West Yorkshire Combined Authority area or areas not covered by another Combined Authority. You will be required to produce evidence of this as part of the enrolment process.

After completing this Level 1 Award there are a number of options available, depending on your final grade you may be offered a place on the Level 1 Diploma course (which is due to start in September 2025), you could move onto an apprenticeship or seek employment in an entry level job in the construction trades.
