LCB students work to restore Victorian walled garden at community farm

Posted on 29 April

A group of LCB bricklaying students have started restoration work on a Victorian walled garden at the Living Potential Care Farm.

Based in Wetherby, Living Potential is an educational, earth-friendly and inclusive community farm.

After a series of site visits, LCB and Living Potential staff agreed that work on their historic Victorian walled garden would be a good place to start their shared project.

The work will take a few months to complete, giving students ample opportunity to learn and develop heritage bricklaying skills.

Sections of the wall will require careful demolition, before being cleaned up, pointed and rebuilt.

LCB is committed to providing students with hands-on experience on real-world projects during their progression whilst also supporting the wider community.

The plan to carry out work at the farm has been underway since 2024 and will likely carry into other projects on site, after the wall restoration is finished.

Living Potential Care Farm is spread over 500 acres and relies on donations and fundraising to maintain their facilities and equipment.

LCB Brickwork lecturer Gurjit Rayat, who accompanied the students on their visit, said: “this project encourages our students to recognise that their skills can contribute to something beyond academic achievement or financial gain, their work can make a tangible difference to people’s lives.

“We are so happy to be involved with Living Potential so we can give back to the community and preserve a part of our proud Yorkshire history.”
