Leeds College of Building’s (LCB) South Bank Campus last week played host to the first ever instalment of the Checkatrade Games.
The Checkatrade Games are a series of high-energy competitive events designed to celebrate craftsmanship and inspire the next generation of skilled tradespeople.
LCB South Bank was chosen to host to event due to our status as a CTEC college, with many of our students taking part.
Our workshop was filled with a range of circus games, snacks and a host of networking opportunities with industry partners.
Fellow Checkatrade partners Leeds Rhinos held a panel discussion about the transformative nature of sport and education with LCB Assistant Principal Steve Connell.
Leeds Rhinos Chief Executive Jamie Jones-Buchanan MBE, Leeds Rhinos Community Clubs Development Officer Sam Horner and Leeds Rhinos legend Danny McGuire also took part in the discussion about how Leeds must come together to tackle the NEET crisis.
The headline events of the day were the timed trade challenge games in electrical, plumbing and painting & decorating.
Hosted and compared by trade content creators Jamie and Paul from ‘Bricking It’, competitors were given a blueprint to finish accurately and in time.
Across the games there was over £2000 cash up for grabs for the winners with £750 for 1st place, £500 for 2nd place and £300 for 3rd place.
Judged by industry experts from Bell, City & Guild and Home & Garden Electronics, the trade challenge games ran across five hours before the winners were announced by Checkatrade Trade Events Manager Ellyse Sainty.
First year LCB Plumbing and Electrical student Fawzi Mohamed took home first prize in electrical despite the Checkatrade Games being the first trade competition he’d ever taken part in.
Reflecting on his win, Fawzi said:
“It feels great, honestly, winning this amount of money, it’s going help me buy tools. I’m saving up for a car as well so it’s going to come in handy. This is the first time I’ve ever done something like this, and it was just an amazing day all round, I’m already looking forward to next year!”
