Overview
Estimators, sometimes called Building Technicians are involved in drafting plans and calculating the total cost of a project. They estimate costs for materials, labour and plant, negotiate deals with suppliers, check the quality of materials and have regular progress meetings with colleagues, clients and architects. Time is split between office and site and they usually work normal office hours.

Qualifications
There are a number of ways you can become an Estimator, as a minimum you will need 4 or more GCSEs grades A-C (9-4) and a minimum of 2 A Levels or BTEC equivalent.
Level 3
You can study a BTEC Subsidiary or Extended Diploma in Construction & the Built Environment or Civil Engineering; or an Advanced Level 3 Apprenticeship in Built Environment Design or Civil Engineering.
Level 4, 5 & 6
You can study a HNC, HND, Higher Apprenticeship or Degree in Construction and the Built Environment, Civil Engineering or Surveying etc.
Salary
Newly trained estimators can earn £18,000 – £20,000
Trained and experienced estimators can earn £20,000 – £35,000
Senior, chartered or master estimators can earn £35,000 – £40,000
