Course Overview

The following qualification will be undertaken:

  • Level 6 Batchelor of Engineering (BEng) Building Services Design Engineering.

The candidate will complete a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates that each of the Knowledge, Skills & Behaviours in the Standard, have been met. This online portfolio of evidence will be submitted to CIOB for use during the professional discussion.

Completion of the apprenticeship standard will be confirmed following the satisfactory conclusion of an End Point Assessment.

Year 2
Semester 1: Advanced Engineering Maths, Integrated Building Design
Semester 2: Refrigeration, Air Conditioning & Heat Pumps, Project & Business Management


Year 3
Semester 1: Heat & Mass Transfer Applications (Mechanical), Lighting & Electrical Systems (Electrical)
Semester 2: Thermal Energy Systems (Mechanical), Electrical Power System & Distribution (Electrical)


Year 4
Semester 1: Energy Management & Controls, Passive Building Design
Semester 2: Major Project

 

In addition to this the apprentice will receive (non-credit bearing) support in the following areas:

  • Work-based learning module – supporting both apprentice and employer in the relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours are gained and demonstrated.
  • Strengthen the apprentice’s ability to work in a team in a collaborative manner.
  • The confidence to present ideas and problem solving to a group of professionals.

Entry Requirements

Typically, an apprentice will be expected to have completed:

  • L4 apprenticeship in Building Services Engineering Senior Technician (ST0372)

OR

  • HNC in Construction and The Built environment

AND

  • Maths Level 2
  • English Level 2

Skills Required

A Building Services Design Engineer will manage a team of engineers and technicians and will collaborate with other construction professionals to design the various services found in buildings and infrastructure projects. The work typically includes systems such as renewable and emerging technologies, energy management, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, drainage, lighting, power, water services, building management systems, life-safety systems, communications and building transportation (e.g. lifts). Buildings and infrastructure take on many forms from newly built facilities to the refurbishment of premises for every sector of industry. As building services design engineers they could be working in a design consultancy, a contractor or a manufacturing company.

Building Services Design Engineers will undertake the technical and commercial management of projects which provide engineering design solutions to maintain and enhance the quality of the environment and community. They will ensure that business, client and end user needs are taken into account and work within financial and safety constraints. They will employ current and emerging technology to produce innovative engineering design solutions for development, manufacture and construction.
