Terry is a Plastering Lecturer at LCB.
When did you start at LCB?
I started in November 2022.
How long have you been involved in construction education?
32 years! I’ve been here four years and 28 years in industry. I started as an apprentice to being self-employed to site manager to site supervisor to trainer to now being a tutor.
What does your day-to-day look like?
Every day is teaching students life experiences, not just plastering, it’s teaching them life experiences. From getting up to punctuality, attendance, working with people, communication. It’s the full range. I don’t just teach people how to put plaster on a wall.
Even if my students don’t become plasterers, I want to give them the kind of confidence that can change their lives. If they develop the confidence to speak to someone that could help them in their career, then my job is done.
How does working at LCB differ to other places you’ve worked?
It’s a community at LCB, it’s a work community. Everybody’s got the same goal. Everybody wants the best for students regardless of what that might be, however that looks. Everybody wants the best for these students. Obviously in construction, you look solely after yourself – especially as a subcontractor making your money. At LCB you look after everybody and everybody looks after you.
What is your favorite thing about your job?
The students, the daily achievement of students and their journey. I see improvements in people every day and it gives me so much confidence for the future.
Do you have a favorite thing you’ve achieved while being here? If so, what?
My TAQA [Training, Assessment, and Quality Assurance] Level 4. I never thought I was going to get a teaching degree, so for me that is exceptional. But my real achievements are always seeing my students achieving – going out and getting employment. Changing young people’s lives is an amazing thing to do.
Has LCB changed since you’ve been here? If so, how?
It is constantly growing in terms of size but fortunately the teaching and the day to day has stayed the same.
What do you want to see in the future for LCB?
Well, like I say – it continues to grow but I want us to always make sure regardless of how big this place gets that we always accommodate everyone like we do now.
Can you sum up LCB in a sentence?
“If you aspire to be a better person – you need to come here!”
