Abigail’s Story – “my dad built our first proper family home”

Why I chose Building Services Engineering

My dad built our first proper family home, and I always enjoyed helping him wherever I could.

Whether that be levelling out cement and writing our names in it, helping carry stones, or just generally being around during the amazing process watching the building emerge, and a dream become a reality.

It is also thanks to my dad that further education and a prospective career has been an important goal of mine. I often drive myself out of my comfort zone and a career in engineering does just that.

Why Leeds College of Building?

Firstly, it is an accessible central location for me, it also provides some great courses within the construction industry that create a stepping stone for further development.

Favourite part of the course

I enjoy the variety that the course offers, it is not solely concentrated on one discipline.

Both electrical and mechanical services are taught, which can give an individual a unique set of skills. It gives me the ability to either concentrate on one of the two disciplines or be able to approach a prospective company with two skill sets instead of one.

I also enjoy the relaxed atmosphere in class with lecturers who have transferred from careers in industry and offer they’re knowledge and experiences from their time.

“The staff are ever so friendly and helpful and the students that I’ve had the pleasure to be around have all been that way as well.”

What’s next for me

My goals are to carry on my education at Leeds Beckett University to achieve a degree in Building Services Engineering and continue to work in industry alongside my apprenticeship.

My advice to the next generation of women in the industry

Even though this type of industry is male dominated, it shouldn’t deter any females from thinking of applying for a course at Leeds College of Building.

The staff are ever so friendly and helpful and the students that I’ve had the pleasure to be around have all been that way as well.

The construction industry is becoming more and more popular amongst women.

I think that people believe that the entirety of the industry involves working on the tools. However, there are many career options available such as design, quantity surveying or a popular one amongst women is project management.
