Who is the course for?

  • This 18th Edition Electrical Wiring Regulations course replaces the 17th Edition course
  • It’s aimed at practicing electricians with relevant experience and allied professionals needing to update and enhance their understanding of the IET Wiring Regulations
  • It may also be suitable for anyone requiring an understanding of BS 7671, although prior knowledge in basic electrical science will be required.

What does the course cover?

  • The IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) are the definitive standards for the electrical industry in respect of safe use and operation of electrical equipment and systems.
  • It is intended to ensure that individuals are conversant with the format, content and application of the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS 7671: 2018

What are some of the key changes? 

  • Protecting against electric shock
  • Protecting against electromagnetic disturbances and voltage disturbance
  • Selection and erection of wiring systems
  • New Appendix to 18th Edition on Energy efficiency

Course pre-requirements:

As the 18th Edition Electrical Installation course is an upgrade to the latest IET Wiring Regulations, it is essential that all candidates have either the 16th, 17th Edition behind them, or are apprentice trained electricians that are now working in the industry and wish to gain this certificate to progress in the workplace.

Entry requirements

The student must have prior knowledge or be an experienced electrician with existing and specific qualifications in electrical work (16th or 17th Electrical Edition qualification completed previously).

Alternatively, the student could be apprentice trained, now working in the industry and wishing to gain this certificate to progress in the workplace.

This qualification is primarily aimed at practising electricians with relevant experience and other allied professionals e.g. surveyors, consultants and other trades needing to update and enhance their understanding of IET Wiring Regulations.

It is also suitable for anyone wishing to demonstrate an understanding of the IET 18th Edition Wiring Regulations needing to upskill.

Electricians who have taken time out of the industry and are looking to return, it is possible they have previously held the 16th Edition certification. This course will benefit them as they can update their knowledge to the current 18th Edition industry standard.

Students will participate in teacher-led discussions and questioning, group work (where appropriate), there will also be a formative assessment where tutors will review and give feedback to students on the assessment.

  • Students can move directly into paid employment or progress into higher paid work.
  • The qualification develops skills and knowledge of students to a high standard which is highly recognised by the industry.
  • Can lead the student into further electrical qualifications such as those listed below.

Knowledge learnt in this course will assist in a wide range of pathways, roles and development within the electrical industry. It allows candidates to progress into employment or to the following City & Guilds qualifications:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Fundamental Inspection, Testing and Initial Verification (2392- 10)
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Building Regulations for Electrical Installation Contractors In Dwellings (2393-10)
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Initial Verification (2391-50)
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Award in the Periodic Inspection (2391-51)
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Inspection and Testing (2391-52)
  • City & Guilds Level 4 Higher Professional Diploma.
