Course overview

This is a 1-year course for adults (19+).

Functional Skills Maths is a highly valued qualification to help both young people and adults develop mathematic skills that can be applied in employment and everyday life.

Whether you are starting from the beginning, or you already have a basic understanding of mathematics, Leeds College of Building is here to support you in achieving a Maths qualification.

There are five Functional Skills Maths levels available with the highest being Level 2 which is equivalent to a GCSE grade C/ 4.

You will be assessed by two examinations at the end of the year.

In addition, you will be regularly internally assessed through in class-controlled assessments, which will be used by your tutor to monitor your progress.

Feedback and actions will be provided after each assessment, with online resources available to further develop your weaker skills.

Please note that courses run subject to minimum viable class sizes.

The course is free however there may be additional costs for books, materials, or other expenses.

Entry requirements

Your existing maths skills will be assessed by completing an initial assessment prior to the course starting.

This will be followed by a short interview in person or over the phone to discuss the most suitable course.

Our tutors cover a range of skills which include:

USING NUMBERS AND THE NUMBER SYSTEM

  • Read, write, order and compare numbers; recognise and use positive and negative numbers
  • Multiply and divide whole numbers and decimals
  • Find fractions of whole number quantities or measurements
  • Read, write, order and compare decimals
  • Approximate by rounding to a whole number or decimal places
  • Calculate percentages of quantities
  • Estimate answers to calculations
  • Work with ratio and direct proportions

 

HANDLING INFORMATION AND DATA

  • Represent discrete data in tables, diagrams and charts including pie charts, bar charts and line graphs
  • Find the mean, median mode and range of a set of numbers
  • Understand probability on a scale from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain) and use probabilities to compare the likelihood of events

 

MEASURES, SHAPES AND SPACE

  • Calculate simple interest on amounts of money
  • Calculate discounts on amounts of money
  • Convert between units of length, weight, capacity, money and time, in the same system
  • Recognise and make use of simple scales on maps and drawings
  • Calculate the area and perimeter of simple shapes; calculate the volumes of cubes and cuboids
  • Use angles when describing position and direction, and measure angles in degrees

 

Students will be supported throughout the course by their lecturer; however, it is important that students are committed to achieving the qualification by regular attendance and completion of mock exams and assessments.

While studying students will be expected to attend weekly 3-hour lessons but also complete additional weekly self-study learning through homework and online resources.

The construction industry is facing a national skills shortage, creating strong demand for qualified professionals across all trades.
