When did you start at LCB?
I started at LCB in the summer of 2022 when I first moved to Leeds. I started in the Admissions team supporting with student recruitment and learner support funds. Everyone was so kind and made me feel so welcome which helped me not just settle into a new workplace, but also a new city.
2How long have you been involved in construction education?
My first experience of the construction industry was when I worked at as a health & safety operative at a Nuclear Power Station in my hometown. This gave me a newfound insight and respect for construction workers. LCB is the perfect place for me to keep growing my knowledge of the construction industry while helping to shape the next generation coming into the sector.
What does your day-to-day look like?
I now work in theMarketing team as the Events Officer. My general day-to-day involves a lot of planning and meeting with other departments and external stakeholders to organise our upcoming college events such as Open Days, our BIG Awards Ceremony and Graduation. I enjoy the variety of this role.
How does working at LCB differ to other places you’ve worked?
The collaboration between departments is really refreshing; you don’t just feel part of your own team; you feel part of a wider community as well. Everyone helps each other out across all roles and levels.
What is your favourite thing about your job?
The people!
Do you have a favourite thing you’ve achieved while being here? If so, what?
One of my favourite moments at LCB was watching two of the students I worked with when I was an Employability Officer both win awards at our BIG Awards Ceremony. After months of building relationships with employers, it was so rewarding to see this develop into meaningful opportunities for our students. They both thrived on placement and it was so rewarding to see their confidence grow, especially as they both went on to secure apprenticeships with their placement employers! I felt very proud.
Has LCB changed since you’ve been here? If so, how?
Yes, the college has grown significantly since I first started which is great to see. We have also been through a rebrand which is exciting and has given the college a much more modern feel that reflects our ever-evolving demographic. It feels cool to work at LCB now!
How has LCB helped you to progress your career?
I have worked across three different teams at LCB since I first started and this has been thanks tothe support of my managers who are genuinely invested in my professional development.
What do you want to see in the future for LCB?
More growth! It is an exciting timeas we have just bought a massive new building across from our North Street site. It will be great to see what new opportunities this presents for both staff and students.
What advice would you give to other women thinking about joining the construction industry?
The construction industry is finally changing and becoming a space that women can thrive and progress in. There continues to be increase in female students at LCB which is great to see. The more women that we can encourage to consider this industry as a career, the more we can break down the stereotypes and make it an equal workforce.
