Staff Stories – Lisa Pannell

Lisa is a Careers Leader at LCB.

When did you start at LCB?

I joined LCB in January 2020.

How long have you been involved in construction education?

I worked in recruitment before moving into the welfare‑to‑work sector, supporting 18–24 year‑olds into employment. In 2016, I moved into education and worked in a primary school, then a high school, and then a sixth form before settling into FE [Further Education] here at LCB.

What does your day‑to‑day look like?

It’s always busy and varied! I support students with planning for their futures, organise careers events, and deliver group sessions.

How does working at LCB differ to other places you’ve worked?

I really enjoy working with this age group. They are young adults who have chosen to be here, and I like being able to provide support and guidance to help them think ahead and make important decisions about their futures.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

When students tell me they’ve secured a job or apprenticeship – seeing how proud they are is the best part.

Do you have a favourite thing you’ve achieved while being here?

Gaining approval to grow the careers team so we can offer more support to students.

Has LCB changed since you’ve been here? If so, how?

Over the years, I’ve really started to feel part of LCB. It is a positive, welcoming place to work. I enjoy my role, I work with great colleagues, and although it’s always busy, I genuinely enjoy being here.

How has LCB helped you to progress your career?

I was given the opportunity to complete my careers guidance qualifications to become a fully qualified Careers Adviser, and I recently studied additional units to progress to Careers Lead. Studying around my working hours – and with three kids! – was a challenge, but I am happy to have achieved it.

What do you want to see in the future for LCB?

LCB’s reputation has really improved over the years, and I feel proud to tell people where I work. I hope the college continues to build on that positive reputation. I would also love to see a visible careers space on both campuses where students can drop in, book appointments, or get careers support.

10) Can you sum up LCB in a sentence?

“LCB is a supportive, positive place where students grow, staff work hard to support them, and every learner is encouraged to aim high.”
