Staff Stories – Michael Martin

Michael is a Curriculum Manager at LCB.

When did you start at LCB?

I started at LCB on the 1st of April 2004 – and yes, my start date probably tells you a lot about me!

How long have you been involved in construction education?

I began my career in construction as an apprentice Joiner on 10th June 1986, attending Hull College. This year marks 40 years since I started in the industry and 23 years working in education.

What does your day-to-day look like?

My days are always different, which is what keeps the job interesting. A typical day includes supporting staff, working with employers, monitoring apprentice progress, meeting with curriculum and quality teams, problem‑solving (often!), and making sure learners and staff have what they need to succeed. There’s a lot of juggling, but it’s rewarding knowing that the work directly impacts learners’ journeys.

How does working at LCB differ to other places you’ve worked?

Before joining LCB, I had never worked in an office environment. I came straight from site after working as a shopfitter and exhibition contractor – a role that took me all over Europe and beyond.

I was lucky enough to work throughout mainland Europe but some interesting places beyond including Russia, Egypt, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Kuwait, and Singapore.

LCB is very different from that world. It’s more structured, collaborative, and focused on long-term development. The stability, sense of community, and shared purpose here are unlike anything I’d experienced before.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

Definitely the people I work with. I know I’m not always the easiest person to get on with, but I genuinely value learning from others. Developing new skills and ideas keeps me motivated and engaged.

Do you have a favorite thing you’ve achieved while being here? If so, what?

I’m proud of the part I’ve played in strengthening the timber department and more recently the apprenticeship provision and supporting both staff and learners to achieve their best. Seeing apprentices progress into successful careers – some even returning as staff – is one of the most rewarding parts of the job. Helping shape teams and contributing to improvements and seeing how people develop over the years is something I look back on with real pride.

Has LCB changed since you’ve been here? If so, how?

Absolutely, on my first day I was issued with a box of chalk and a pack of acetate sheets! LCB has evolved continuously to meet the demands of industry, technology, and modern apprenticeships. The college has grown in its ambition, its facilities, and its approach to learner support. It’s far more forward-thinking now, with stronger employer partnerships and a clear focus on high-quality learning.

How has LCB helped you to progress your career?

LCB has given me opportunities I never expected when I first walked through the door. I’ve developed from teaching into leadership, gained new skills, and qualifications, and grown in confidence. The support from colleagues and managers over the years has been a big part of my progression.

What do you want to see in the future for LCB?

I want to see the College continue to build on its strengths – strong employer collaboration, innovative curriculum design, and high-quality support for learners. Continued investment in staff development and facilities will keep us moving forward. Most importantly, I’d like LCB to remain a place where learners feel inspired and where staff feel valued and supported.

Can you sum up LCB in a sentence?

“A community, built on people, purpose, and pride.”
