Staff Stories – Steve Connell

Steve is Assistant Principal at LCB.

When did you start at LCB?

I started as a lecturer in Wall and Floor Tiling in 2001.

How long have you been involved in construction education?

I started my career as an apprentice Wall & Floor Tiler in 1989 where I attended LCB on a block release program. I have remained in the construction industry throughout my career.

What does your day-to-day look like?

Most days you’ll find me based in the office at our North Street campus and I like to arrive early before many staff are in the building. It is rare that my days ever look the same, and that’s exactly what I love about it. My role is packed with variety, and I get to work with an incredible range of people across the college (and beyond!)

Meetings are a regular feature, sometimes face‑to‑face, sometimes online and I really enjoy that constant interaction. Alongside this, I monitor progress, plan new initiatives, problem solve, and supporting teams across the college.

Every day brings something new, and that mix of tasks, conversations, and connections is a big part of why I love working at LCB. It’s busy, it’s varied, and it keeps me on my toes.

How does working at LCB differ to other places you’ve worked?

Coming to LCB straight from industry as a wall and floor tiler was a huge shift, but in the best possible way. I’d spent years travelling all over the UK, living out of hotel rooms and rarely being home, so suddenly having the luxury of sleeping in my own bed every night felt amazing!

One of the first things that really struck me about LCB was just how warm and welcoming everyone is. The friendliness here isn’t just a nice extra, it’s part of what makes the college feel special. Being surrounded by supportive colleagues who genuinely want to help each other succeed has been and still is a real highlight for me.

As a tiler, I was used to working either completely solo or in very small teams. Moving into an environment where I’m constantly around people, chatting, sharing ideas, working together, was a big change, but one I took to straight away. I love the buzz of it. It’s energising, and it makes every day feel different.

LCB is a place where I not only work but really enjoy what I do. It’s a very different world from industry, and honestly, I wouldn’t want it any other way. I’ve also been conditioned to working in a heated building throughout winter which beats freezing my bones on cold building sites!

What is your favorite thing about your job?

Without a doubt, the best part of my job is knowing that I play a part in changing lives. Helping people take their next steps, whether that’s moving into further study or securing their first big opportunity in the workplace is something I’m incredibly proud of. There’s nothing quite like seeing someone grow in confidence, achieve their goals, and head off into a career they’re excited about.

One of my absolute highlights every year is the LCB Big Awards. Standing there in a room full of proud students, families, and staff, celebrating the incredible achievements of our learners – it’s fantastic to be a part of. Moments like that remind me exactly why I love what I do.

Being able to support people on their journey and watch them succeed is the most rewarding part of working at LCB and it’s what makes this role so special to me.

Do you have a favorite thing you’ve achieved while being here? If so, what?

One achievement that will always stand out for me goes back to my teaching days. I had the privilege of training a student who went on to win two National SkillBuild gold medals and then took things even further by representing the UK at WorldSkills. Having competed at WorldSkills myself, seeing him follow that path filled me with enormous pride.

What makes it even more special is that he’s now running his own thriving wall and floor tiling business. Watching someone you’ve taught not only succeed in competition, but build a successful career from it, is incredibly rewarding.

Beyond the big moments, it’s the small part I’ve played in helping every student take their next step, no matter how big or small, that means the most to me. Those everyday successes are what make my time at LCB truly fulfilling.

Has LCB changed since you’ve been here? If so, how?

Yes! LCB has changed a lot since I first joined! The college has grown massively in size, which has brought new buildings, improved infrastructure, and a much larger community of both students and staff. Further Education is always evolving, and LCB has done a brilliant job of adapting to the needs of both industry and education so it can maintain its position as the only nationally recognised college dedicated entirely to construction and the built environment.

One of the biggest developments has been the evolution of LCB’s University Centre (LCBU). Students can now start with us at entry level and progress all the way through to degree-level study, all within the same supportive environment and often within the same buildings. That progression route is something really special, and it shows just how far the college has come.

How has LCB helped you to progress your career?

LCB has played a huge part in my career journey. I’ve always tried to grab opportunities as they’ve come along, and I’ve been lucky to have colleagues who’ve supported and encouraged me every step of the way. Whether it’s through formal training, CPD sessions, or simply learning from the people I work alongside, I’ve constantly been able to grow and develop.

I’ve learned so much just by observing others, seeing different approaches, picking up ideas, and being inspired by the expertise around me. LCB is the kind of place where people genuinely want you to progress, and that supportive environment has helped me build confidence and take on new challenges that I might not have tackled otherwise.

A former manager once said to me: “always believe in yourself and have the confidence to take on new roles and opportunities.” These words have stuck with me throughout my career, and I would say this is good advice for anyone who might question their own ability.

What do you want to see in the future for LCB?

Looking ahead, I’d love to see LCB continue to grow, especially with the exciting addition of our new building, which will expand the North Street campus and open up even more opportunities for our students and staff. It feels like a positive step forward for the college.

I also want to see LCB get the recognition it truly deserves for the outstanding work we do in supporting the construction industry. We play a huge role in developing the next generation of skilled professionals, and I’d love to see our reputation continue to strengthen.

Ultimately, my hope is for LCB to firmly cement its place as the leading provider of education and training for construction and the built environment. With the talent, dedication, and passion across the college, I genuinely believe that’s exactly where we’re heading.

Can you tell me about your involvement in the aspiring managers programme?

I’ve had the pleasure of co‑delivering Module 2, Building High‑Performing Teams, for the past two years, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It’s given me the chance to share some of the knowledge and skills I’ve picked up throughout my own career, while supporting colleagues who have the passion and drive to step into leadership and management roles.

Can you sum up LCB in a sentence?

“A truly unique college that’s not only an incredible place for students to learn, but an equally fantastic place to work and be part of.”
