Course overview

This is a Level 4 Civil Engineering Senior Technician apprenticeship. 

The candidate will complete an online portfolio of evidence which demonstrates that each of the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours in the Standard, have been met in readiness for the end point assessment. This online portfolio of evidence will be supervised by in-company mentors and LCB assessors.

Completion of the apprenticeship standard will be confirmed following the satisfactory conclusion of an End Point Assessment.


What would apprentices learn at College?

If required, a Level 3, 1 year Bridging course to HE is available at an additional fee to prepare the candidate for the HNC/HTQ. This is dependent on the candidate’s current qualifications and industry experience.

The first year and second year of the level 4 apprenticeship includes a HNC CBE (Civil Engineering pathway) with specific units including:

  • Construction Practice & Management
  • Principles of Structural Design
  • Construction Technology
  • Surveying, Measuring & Setting Out

A portfolio of evidence will also be progressed and developed throughout the practical period of the Standard.


Skills required

The main duties and tasks of a Civil Engineering Senior Technician are:

  • Produce and deliver Civil Engineering Solutions
  • Manage Civil Engineering Tasks
  • Use Engineering Software
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety, apply safe systems of work, including the CDM Regs.
  • Recording, control and reporting of progress on a construction project
  • Contribute to the minimisation of the environmental impact of construction projects
  • Control the quality of works
  • Ensure compliance with equality, diversity and inclusion and ethical standards

Entry requirements

Typically an apprentice will be expected to have achieved at least 5 GCSEs at Grades 4-9 including Maths, English and Science or their equivalent.

Alternative qualifications or appropriate experience may also be considered.

If candidates have a relevant level 3 qualification or appropriate ‘A’ levels, they may progress straight to year 2 of the standard.

From 1st April 2021 all employers are required to use the government apprenticeship service to secure funding for any apprentices they wish to employ.  Apprentices will be unable to start their course at college without reserving funding.
