Course overview

This electrical course is ideal for those who want to pursue a career as an electrician.

Electrician’s fit, test and repair electrical installations found in homes and businesses. This could include, fitting consumer units and circuit breakers, connecting wires to sockets, switches and light fittings and installing fire alarms.

Installation electricians follow architects’ or contractors’ plans to install new electrical equipment.

Our study programmes include a vocational qualification, English and maths, work experience and employability skills.

Students also have the opportunity to take part in sport and enrichment activities alongside their course.

You can easily transfer from a study programme onto an electrical apprenticeship course if you secure employment in the electrical industry.

Entry requirements

For the Level 2 Electrical Diploma students will need to have 5 GCSEs including Maths, Science and English at grade 4 or higher, and 2 other subjects at grade 3 or higher.

Students who have difficulty distinguishing colours due to their colour vision will need to take a colour vision test before enrolling on this course.

On this electrical course you will study:

  • How to install cables and equipment, including sockets and switches, for electrical installations.
  • How to test and commission electrical installations to ensure they work and meet the health and safety requirements.
  • The health and safety legislation relating to the installation and maintenance of electrical systems.
  • The environmental impact of electrical installations.
  • How to design electrical installations selecting the correct size and type of cable and equipment (Level 2 only).

No matter what level you are currently working at, you will continue learning English and maths throughout your course.

After completing this course there are a number of options available. Depending on your final grade you could move onto the Level 3 Technical or the electrical apprenticeship.

Please note, this course is training only. To achieve the full trade qualification and become fully qualified, you must have on-site experience and complete assessments.
