Functional Skills is a recognised and respected qualification in English. This is a course for those who are English speakers but would like to improve their reading, writing or verbal skills, or simply want to gain a formal qualification.
Functional Skills equips you with the practical English needed to live, learn and work successfully. The course content will help you develop skills in spelling, punctuation and grammar in your own writing. You will develop your reading skills to identify language features and text structure.
We offer Functional Skills English at Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2. Each level is comprised of three modules: Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening. All three elements need to be successfully completed to obtain the qualification.
Entry Level and Level 1 are the ideal foundation for further study and Level 2 is recognised by many employers and universities as a GCSE equivalent.
No formal prior qualifications are required. You will be invited to do an initial assessment to ensure you are enrolled at the correct level and so you can make good progress.
You need to commit to attending each session for the whole course duration and will be expected to complete any additional set work outside of the class to ensure you make good progress.
You will be regularly assessed by your tutor and will be given feedback and action points to ensure you are making progress and are fully prepared for your exams.
You will be assessed via an exam in Reading and Writing. The Speaking & Listening unit will be internally assessed by your tutor and then externally quality assured.
Functional Skills English courses are free for most adults if they are a UK resident, 19+ and do not already have an equivalent qualification.
The course will run subject to minimum viable class sizes. If you successfully complete all three modules at any level, you can apply for the next progress level course.
