A Leeds College of Building apprentice is celebrating after becoming a finalist in The National Apprenticeship Awards 2019.

Joe Groves, from Wordsworth Interiors, was announced the winner of the NOCN Group Award for Intermediate Apprentice of the Year at the regional finals of the National Apprenticeship Awards 2019. Joe studies Site Carpentry at the College and he was nominated by Curriculum Manager Paul Toher and his tutor Mark Allinson.

The glittering award ceremony took place at Leeds Marriot Hotel on 19 September. Joe will now progress on to the national stage of the National Apprenticeship Awards 2019 on 27 November alongside others from a wide range of industries and occupations.

Joe has worked for Wordsworth Interiors since he started his apprenticeship in 2017, and said:

“I was so happy to be shortlisted, and when I heard my name called out I couldn’t believe that I had won the regional award, I had to do a quick speech and answered some questions on my time being an apprentice. We had a great day in a fantastic venue. I'm looking forward to the national event that takes place in November, where I will be up against 8 other apprentices from across the UK!”

Joe's work is some of the best I have seen in my teaching career, particularly in practical sessions where he excels. He finished his level 2 NVQ well ahead of schedule and he is a pleasure to teach.
