A former Leeds College of Building roofing apprentice has just been awarded an international prize for his contribution to Team UK at the IFD (International Federation for the Roofing Trade) competition. Will Emerton, who completed a Roof Slating & Tiling Apprenticeship at Leeds College of Building and is now employed at Emerton Roofing, was selected for Team UK to compete in the 27th World Championship for Young Roofers 2018.

Alongside teammates Donald Harkin and mentor Bob Coutts, Will competed in the annual three-day event in Riga, Latvia, in pitched roofing, flat roofing, and metal roofing disciplines.

Team UK was awarded the prestigious ‘Special President’s Prize’ for Roofing on Friday (16 November 2018) at a glitzy awards ceremony to conclude the international competition. A total of 30 teams from 11 countries participated in the event in the categories of roofing, waterproofing, metal roofing, and façade.

Chris Messenger, a lecturer at Leeds College of Building, said:

“We are so proud of Will and everything he has achieved since leaving the College. Success like this is a great way to inspire our current students and shows what can be achieved when you are as determined as Will. Well done to all of those involved in Team UK, so much goes on behind the scenes to get the competitors ready for events like this.”
